The Santee Riverkeeper Alliances mission is to promote respect, protect and improve the Santee River, Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie through education, advocacy and action. Goals include creating clean and healthy river and lakes that sustain life and is treasured by its people. To achieve this vision, we seek to accomplish the following objectives: sustain a RIVERKEEPER program, measurably improve water quality, reestablish native bio-diversity, and teach and practice a water ethic of ecological respect to all ages.
Chapel Branch has been neglected for years. The stream has been inundated with stormwater sediment from the stormwater run-off between I-95 and Bass Drive. The run-off from Interstate 95 created a gulley from the South Bound exit ramp all the way down to Bass drive.
From calculations the amount of sediment erosion from the gulch equals approximately (if not more) the same amount of sediment that has accumulated within the creek. What once was a beautiful, fully navigable, fishable, and swimmable creek now contains thousands of cubic yards of stormwater sediment from the water washing from I-95 and Bass Drive.
